In 1894, James Kane conveyed two parcels of land to the Trustees of the Mennonite Church for use as a burial ground and meeting house. After the meeting house burned in 1914, it was decided not to rebuild. The population of the Mennonites had started to decline in membership and never fully recovered. The property was sold to the Trustees of the Mt Zion AME church in 1922. The Landmarks Preservation Commission supported the nomination under one criteria: for it's association with a personality, group, event, or series of historical importance.
