The AIA Award-winning Gradient House, designed by Chris Brown, is an architectural marvel built to serve as a sophisticated live-work campus, but can also be used as two separate residences. United by a shared roof and material palette, the house and studio frame a courtyard with views of the St. Johns Bridge, Willamette River, and West Hills. The location was selected for the duality it offers : complete seclusion immersed in nature with breathtaking views combined with a true connection to the St. Johns neighborhood where you can enjoy the ability to stroll the main street for a coffee, glass of wine, or even a movie. The Gradient House was a serendipitous collaboration between the designer-owners, architect, and builder that boasts high-quality materials including metal tile roofs, concrete countertops, and custom metalwork, maintaining the owners' product designer sensibilities in mind throughout. The interiors use maple paneling and hidden cabinets to emphasize the essential elements of materiality, fine detailing, and durability to the spaces while minimizing clutter and distraction. The eye-catching and iconic, large glazed monitors are utilized throughout to bring in natural light. The landscape was designed by Wesley Younie to blur the line between the landscape and the natural space of the Baltimore woods below, while also creating intentional, functional outdoor rooms where the homeowners not only could relax and dine but also where they could make a phone call or have a meeting in the garden just outside their home studio. Concrete courts and planters filter rainwater before returning it back to the landscape and are filled with dramatic yet low-maintenance plantings that respond to each season of the year. LOW taxes.
